For the first time in 3 years England put out the exact same team for 2 consecutive games. Obviously Steve McLaren was pleased with the way the team had performed 4 days before in the 3-0 win over Israel.
The atmosphere at Wembley was one of confidence and optimism, it was clear that the fans had been boosted by the solid weekend performance.

Right from the start it was clear Russia would be a much more taxing opponent than Israel. The Russian wingers and forwards looked very quick on and off the ball; especially Yuri Zhirkov down the left side. However Russia's spritely mood was ruined in the 7th minute when Gareth Barry's cross found Michael Owen with far too much space only a few yards from Goal. Owen took his time to place the ball coolly past the 3rd choice Russian goalkeeper Malafeev.

The Russians bounced back and started to create some good opportunities. Micah Richards seem to find himself frequently out numbered on the England right flank; as Wright-Phillips was often guilty of not tracking back to defend.
Russia thought they had equalized when Zyrianov managed to get a deflected cross into the back of England's net, only to have the referee rule out the goal. The ball had bounced up and hit Zyrianov on the arm and chest; it was a decision that could have gone either way.

In the 31st minute Heskey climbed high to win yet another aerial ball, finding Michael Owen in acres of space in front of goal. Owen hammered in the goal on the half volley leaving the goalie no chance.

In the second half Russia came out very strong for the first 10-15 minutes. They had numerous shots and crosses run past the England net. After 15 minutes England had managed to weather the storm and stabilized the game. From this point it seemed the sting had gone from the Russian team, and they did not have too much more to offer.

Rio Ferdinand capped off the victory smacking home a shot beating the keeper at the near post; illustrating once again that his skills go far beyond defensive duties.

England had looked shaky at times, but at the end of the day a 3-0 victory was more than enough. England now move above Russia into second place in group E.
