It was a big Sunday for the premier league with Liverpool at home to Man. United and Arsenal playing host to Chelsea. The matches would sort out the serious title contenders.
Liverpool were sitting fifth in the table; while Manchester Utd. were just 1 point behind the league leaders Arsenal, in second position. If Liverpool wanted to prove they are still in the title race a win would be expected.
The match started off at a frantic rate with quick passing, tackles flying in and 4 yellow cards doled out in the first 45 minutes. Liverpool created the best chances with the ball twice cleared off the line when Van de Sar collided with his defenders on two separate occasions.
As the half went on United started to apply the pressure. In the 40th minute Hargreaves won a corner for United and Giggs played it out to the edge of the box for the on coming Rooney. Rooney struck in a shot towards the far post and Tevez deflected it into the roof of the net. It was some sloopy defending by Liverpool's Benayoun, who should have pushed out off the post and caught Tevez offside.
United went into halftime with a score line of 1-0.
It was clear in the second half that United were happy to sit on their lead and wait for counter-attacking opportunities. Rooney should have put the game to bed midway through the half when Ronaldo's cross left him with only the keeper to beat; but he shot wide instead.
Liverpool continued to attack but were unable to create any real chances against the solid Manchester back four.
The game end 1-0 with Manchester United reclaiming their position at the top of the EPL.
